[Wednesday Stories] “Stood and wait”

In the period before Vassa (3 months period) in BE2488, Luang Pu Sim travelled to Nakhon Phanom province and took up residence at Langka Mountains (Now known as Phulangka National Park). Luang Pu Sim then decided to spend his Vassa there for that year.

Langka Mountain along with Ranga Mountain are two of the mountains in Nakhon Phanom province. Luang Pu Sim had spend a previous Vassa on Ranga Mountain, and it was condusive as there was a forest hermitage and villages on the mountain, so food was not a major problem. But Langka Mountain was the total opposite, there were no forest hermitage and not a single village on this mountain.

On his way up the mountain, Luang Pu Sim realized other than wild animals, there were not a single human in sight. Luang Pu even recounted on some nights during his stay there, he could hear tigers pacing around his tentage and could hear them howling loudly.

While staying on this mountain, water was scarce and food was even more limited. Because of the lack of villages, there were occasions when Luang Pu would go on almsround and receive nothing for 9 to 10 days straight. In those days, the closest village was afew days walk from the mountain, so it was close to impossible for Luang Pu to go on his daily almsround there.

Author: “Luang Pu, when you went on almsround and received nothing, what would you do?”

Luang Pu Sim: “I’ll just stand there and wait with my alms bowl”

Author: “Luang Pu, you were able to go for days without food?”

Luang Pu Sim: “I still managed have food”

Author: “Who gave Luang Pu the food? Did someone came to offer?”

Luang Pu Sim: * Luang Pu smiled and did not reply *

Author: “Was it the villagers that came to offer food?”

Luang Pu Sim: “It wasn’t villagers that came to offer me food. When I was staying there, there weren’t any villagers on the mountain, I was all alone.”

In the end, Luang Pu spend many months staying on Langka Mountain. But no one knew who or what came to offer Luang Pu Sim food while he was staying there.
